“Modern Nature” is an exuberant celebration of one of art’s most pervasive themes: the natural world. While the four artists showcased - America Martin, Alberto Murillo, Stallman, and Annie Vought - are stylistically diverse, they are brought together by a shared interest in reinterpreting nature for the twenty-first century. These artists not only explore innovative ways to represent the theme, but also question the role of nature in increasingly urbanized societies.

Each of these artists approach their subject matter from a deeply personal perspective. Colombian-American artist America Martin captures fleeting moments in her still lifes, transcending the genre with her confident lines, bold palette, and abstracted shapes. Martin’s still lifes revel in the beauty of nature while calling attention to its temporality. Alberto Murillo’s abstract fields of color evoke the memory of places, from calming seascapes to the vibrant maelstrom of cities. Through a dynamic use of layered resins, Murillo allows viewers a glimpse into his inner life. The Pacific Northwest duo Stallman (partners Stephen Stum and Jason Hallman) draw upon their fascination with the shapes of cells, fractals, and other natural phenomena to create undulating, organic forms from sculpted pieces of canvas. Their collaborative process contributes to the spontaneous, uncontrived quality of their work, mimicking the unpredictability of nature itself. Annie Vought finds inspiration in both the organic world and the built environment, imbuing her cut paper pieces with a richly woven series of patterns, lines, and words that recall the chaotic experience of contemporary life. While there is an intimate quality to each of these artists’ work, the universality of their themes allow them to resonate with many.

These artists will inspire, provoke, engage and mesmerize. With visual perceptions always changing, peek behind the stories told and you're sure to find the right artistic expression!
