JoAnne Artman Gallery is pleased to present Architects of Motion, a dynamic exhibition featuring new works by John “CRASH” Matos and Matt Devine. Bringing together two distinct artistic voices, the exhibition explores movement as both visual language and physical experience, revealing how line, form, color, and space can transform static objects into expressions of energy and rhythm.

Though their practices surface from vastly different mediums, CRASH and Devine share a fascination with the ways movement can be captured, implied, and experienced. Their works invite viewers into environments where gesture becomes structure and line becomes action, creating a dialogue between two-dimensional imagery and three-dimensional space.

A pioneering figure in contemporary graffiti and urban art, John “CRASH” Matos emerged from New York City’s subway art movement of the 1970s and has spent decades expanding the possibilities of the genre. His paintings pulse with vibrant color, sweeping lines, and fragmented imagery that blend the spontaneity of street culture with the formal sophistication of contemporary painting. Layers of visual information collide and overlap, creating pieces that feel perpetually in motion. In CRASH’s work, energy becomes visible, an unfolding choreography of color, rhythm, and mark-making.

Matt Devine approaches movement through sculpture, transforming metal elements into elegant, flowing constructions that seem to shift and breathe within their surroundings. Through carefully balanced curves, intersections, and negative space, Devine creates forms that suggest growth, suspension, and continual metamorphosis. Light and shadow become active participants in the work, extending each sculpture beyond its physical boundaries and into the space around it. His sculptures possess a remarkable sense of fluidity, appearing simultaneously grounded and weightless.

Together, these artists explore how movement can be constructed, whether through the motion of immediacy of a painted gesture or the physical presence of sculptural shapes. CRASH’s energetic compositions expand outward across the picture plane while Devine’s sculptures extend into the surrounding environment, creating a conversation that blurs the boundaries between image and object, surface and space.

Architects of Motion highlights the ways artists can influence our perception of movement without requiring actual motion.
